World Rugby is the world governing and law-making body for the sport of Rugby Union based in Dublin, Ireland. In addition to its governance functions World Rugby organises several international tournaments and events including the pinnacle of Rugby World Cups for Men’s, Women’s and Sevens.
World Rugby wishes to appoint a commercial Legal Counsel who will be involved in a broad range of commercial legal work which supports the operational needs of World Rugby and the various World Rugby tournaments. This varied role will include drafting and negotiating a range of commercial agreements, advising on intellectual property rights and dealing with a diverse range of stakeholders including our commercial partners and Member Unions.
Advise on World Rugby’s use of data and compliance with the data protection regimes.
Assist in the drafting and negotiation of high value complex commercial agreements with an international element across several areas, including, but not exclusively – sponsorship, broadcasting, merchandising and licensing and tender arrangements.
Advise on general trademark, design, copyright and domain name issues and manage the protection and enforcement of IP rights on World Rugby’s international trademark portfolio.
Provide legal guidance and input into specific tournament areas such as accreditation, commercial activations and other tournament initiatives.
Key skills and attributes
Qualified lawyer/solicitor in a common-law jurisdiction with strong academic credentials.
Solid training and commercial experience gained either in-house or in a leading Irish/international law firm.
Proven ability to deal with all aspects of contract law, as well as working knowledge of data protection and IP rights.
Project management skills would be an advantage.
Excellent negotiation skills and the ability to work in a pressurised, fast-paced environment.
Team player with enthusiasm for the sports sector.
